A lobby entrance defined by a modular ceiling with a series of tapered cone-shaped ‘coffers’ housing LED lights, in San Francisco.
A series of diamond-shaped translucent wood coffers define the main lobby entrance, acting as a lighted modular ceiling. Projecting the language of coffers’ angled surfaces, a series of faceted surfaces move from the reception desk, to the walls that lead to the elevators at the end of a tapered and inflected hallway.’
Each coffer is made by folding a translucent wooden veneer into a diamond-shape.
A mesmerizing effect results from the various play of light and shape from the tubes. The effect oftransparency on the ends and solidity on the sides is striking, as the cube’s weightiness is transformed. The functionality of the B (h) uis keeps it from being just an exercise in aesthetic expression. The project is a novel use of waste material to make a high functioning and durable place for relaxation. By transforming the tubes into building blocks the Hoogte Twee created a rational space that can be contemplated, used and even explored– if you’re the right size.
